JOB TITLE: Director of Security, Grade 30
LOCATION: Headquarters Library
DATE AVAILABLE: February 1, 2025
SALARY: $61,755 per year (Includes a generous benefits package)

HOURS: 40 hours per week
Monday through Friday 8:30am-5:00pm (Note: Must be flexible to accommodate rotating hours and occasional schedule changes.)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in criminal justice, security administration or related field. Three years supervisory experience. Must complete pre-employment testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plans, organizes, promotes and presents a variety of safety and security programs for staff and the public including special events, recommending new security protocols as needed.
  • Supervises and trains Assistant Director of Security and all Security Assistants
  • Works with staff and patrons to interpret, explain and enforce SCPL’s Behavior Policy and Code of Conduct to provide an atmosphere conducive to appropriate use of the library’s facilities and services
  • Maintains an appropriately pleasant and respectful demeanor in all contacts with patrons, with an emphasis on a positive impression of the library and its services
  • Responsible for scheduling, weekly time approval, and routine performance evaluations for security staff.
  • Responds to patron questions regarding security in person, over the phone, and electronically and meets with patrons regarding issues as necessary
  • Maintains an open line of communication with Administration with adherence to strict confidentiality and recommends appropriate policies and procedures
  • Maintains awareness of the library collection and areas that may be susceptible to theft; roves the library to observe unusual patterns of behavior
  • Patrols the interior and exterior of all libraries, including parking lots, to provide a continuous, high level of visibility and vigilance
  • Participates as a member of the SCPL management team, attending meetings and addressing security and safety concerns for systemwide implementation.
  • Serves as a liaison for emergency service agencies and homeless patrons.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in criminal justice, security administration or related field
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in building and grounds security
  • Familiarity with security cameras
  • Knowledge of security procedures and of safety principles and practices
  • Ability to recognize and identify activities or situations which have or may become a problem or emergency requiring immediate attention
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and library patrons and to coordinate tasks with co-workers, exhibiting tact, courtesy, and good judgement.
  • Three years supervisory experience
  • Law enforcement experience preferred
  • Driver’s license valid in the State of South Carolina with the ability to drive to other libraries
