JOB TITLE: Director of Makerspace , Grade 30
LOCATION: Headquarters Library
DATE AVAILABLE: March 1, 2026
SALARY: 61,754 per year (Includes generous benefits package)

HOURS: 40 hours per week

Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:30pm

(Note: Must be flexible to accommodate for schedule changes and community events)



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school with extensive knowledge of Makerspaces in public libraries with 3 years of supervisory experience. Must pass pre-employment testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Developsobjectivesand key results for the library Makerspaceandmaker services.
  • Clearly communicates SCPL’s philosophyof andmaker services to staff. 
  • Participates in the interview and selection process forMakerspaceassistants and instructors. 
  • Regularlymeetswith librarians and assistants around the system to provide guidance and help with makerspace programming, equipment, and events. 
  • Oversees theMakerspace budgetandpurchasingand prepares reports as needed to evaluate services. 
  • Buildsrelationships within the community, attending meetings, and connecting to local services to promote theMakerspace in Spartanburg County. 
  • Supervises, evaluates, coaches, and trains theMakerspaceInstructorsand Assistants. 
  • RepresentsSCPL at conferences and events related tomakerservices. 
  • Collaborates in the development ofprogramming andmaintainsequipment for the S.T.E.A.M mobilelabincluding collaboration with the PlanetariumDirector.


KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Master’s degree in library sciencefrom an accredited ALA library school with knowledge of Makerspaces in public libraries
  • Extensive ability tolearn new equipment andtroubleshoot technologyrelated tomakerservices (laser cutter, 3D printing, embroidery machine, Pro Spangle, Cricut, Adobe, Canva,video editing software,etc…)
  • Thorough knowledge of professional library principles and practices, with three years of library experience and directsupervisory experience. 
  • Experience inmaintaininga budget, keeping track of expenses, and budget planning.
  • Forward-thinking, with the drive to set andaccomplishlong-term goals for the department 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability toestablishdeadlines,monitorprogress, and work well with a team 
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • SCPL uses multi-factor authentication for network and program access. Employees maybe requiredto use their personal device for MFA.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to drive to other libraries or community outreach
